As gas prices and unemployment rates continue to climb staycations (or vacations close to home) are becoming more and more popular. Don’t totally give up on the possibility of a much needed getaway, but rather do some research and find a frugal getaway close to home.  Many hotels offer summer specials to locals, but you could  even offer to house sit for someone who is going away for a week if you need a change of scenery.

I think that’s what my wife and I are doing for 4th of July weekend but we did get to take a 3-day Las Vegas trip last weekend. I will write about that shortly and offer up all my my “Vegas on a dime” secrets.

What are you waiting for? Plan your staycation TODAY!

Have a Happy, Safe, and Blessed 4th of July!

In the midst of a weak economy and at a time when airlines are nickel and diming us all, there are still ways to find great deals on airfare.  In particular, Southwest Airlines continues to offer great deals to their email subscribers and through their desktop application - DING.

I recommend visiting the website for whatever airline or airlines that you fly most frequently are register for both the frequent flier program and any email subscriptions they may offer.  Here are two examples of email specials that I received in the past few days:

  • Spirit Airlines continued to offer super airfare deals, such as their “$8 fares”.
  • Recently, I got an email from Southwest about their upcoming anniversary special this Wednesday where they are going to offer some great fares.

So here are your steps to getting in the know and finding travel deals.

1. Visit the website for the airlines you use the most and either enroll in the frequent flier program. If you are already in,  then make sure your information is updated because many will also send you specials by mail.

2. Enroll in any subscriptions they offer to be kept up to date with specials they are having.  It certainly works - you want cheap travel and they want to fill seats.

3. Download DING from Southwest.com if you are a Southwest traveler.  DING is a desktop application that notifies you immediately through your computer whenever they post specials for your specific selected cities.  I don’t know of any other airlines that offer such a service, but if you do, I’d love to hear about it.
NOTE: You may not be able to install this on a work computer depending on your companies policy on downloads. If this happens, I would explain to your IT department what the application is.  Also, if you travel for business, they should want to allow you to use this as it will save the company money. You could always just refer them to this post and the DING page at Southwest.com.

Personally, I am hoping to get a deal tomorrow on my upcoming Vegas trip on Southwest.

As gas rapidly approaches $5.00 per gallon in the US, most of us would do anything to get some free gas. The good news is that it isn’t that hard with Expedia’s FREE Gas Card offer. I just booked a trip to Vegas and when I was checking out, I noticed that Expedia was offering a $50 Gas Card for booking a 3 night hotel stay, so I took advantage of it. Technically, it’s a Master Card offer and the gift card is coming from Master Card and is to be mailed within 6 weeks. Now that I think about it, I don’t know if it’s 3-6 weeks after booking or after the travel is completed. The latter would make more sense from a business standpoint, but the site was not clear.

When checking out, make sure you read the fine print because certain hotel stays do not apply.

Visit Expedia to book your next hotel stay and get your free gas card! Hurry - this offer ends on June 15th.

Frugal Travel Tips

Travel seems to be getting more and more expensive, but the savvy travelers are still finding ways to make it happen without going broke.  Here are some helpful travel tips to help you save money on your next trip.

Fly Southwest Airlines.  While I am not employed by Southwest Airlines, I am a minority stock holder in the company.  All that aside, my reasons for choosing Southwest as my #1 choice for frugal flying is that they are the only airline (to my knowledge) that does not charge fees to change or cancel flights.  When others are chargning upwards of $100 for a simple change as well as chargning for luggage and raising prices, Southwest remains comitted to serving customers and with a smile.  And here’s what’s better; if you are holding a ticket and the price gets better before you fly, you can rebook and get the difference as credit - again at no cost to you.  That rocks!

Are they perfect? No (perfection only exists in Heaven), but if you want to watch your wallet and not let the current airline price changes affect your summer trip, fly Southwest.

DISCLAIMER: While Southwest Airlines does not pay me to write nice thigs about them, I really think they should.

Fly All Day Long. If you are willing to wake up super early and make multiple stops, you can book on Priceline and find a cheap fare.  It will likely orginite at a time when peoople should be sleeping and give you an aerial tour of much of the United States.

Shop Online.
This is no secret, but by checking a few online travel sites you can often compare and find deals - especially with hotels.  I have found many “web specials” at hotel sites that are not available at the hotel website and I have had some hotel booking agents tell me to check the web for “web specials” that they are not authorized to give.  I recommend starting with Expedia.

Book Your Flight After Midnight.  On most airlines prices drop at midnight (in whatever time zone their headquarters are in) because they often put a “hold” on seats and then if people don’t book by midnight the system “flushes” and then the new seats are back.  Also, people will make changes cancellations and those will flush out as well.

Fly All Night. Red-eye flights are often cheaper, but you better not have plans the next day because you won’t likely sleep well.

Take Longer Trips Around Holidays. Leave a day or two before the rush or leave a few days after (preferably both) and you can avoid increased holiday travel prices, and escape the crowds.

Lose Your Image. When renting cars, ask for the cheapest class.  Who cares how you look in it, chances are you won’t spend much time driving anyhow, unless you are taking a driving trip, then of course, the rules change.  Also, very often what you get will be the next size up and often if you just ack nicely, you can get a free upgrade.

FREE Airport Luggage Carts. Most airport have a common area where passenger get in line to pass through security and deplane.  It is in this area where people leave their luggage carts because they cannot bring them through secuirty.  I have done this a lot - just swallow your pride and walk up to a cart sitting there and go get your luggage.  It will save you a few bucks every time.

Become a Part Time Travel Agent. You will make a little money that you can put away for your trips, PLUS you can score some insider deals (a.k.s. FAM trips). Here is a simple guide that will help you learn hoe to become a home-based travel agent without spending a fortune.
